Study Shows Affordable Retraining of Oil Workers for Solar Industry

Posted : November 2, 2023

A transition from fossil fuels to renewables does not necessarily equate to unemployment for Canada's oil and gas sector. In fact, retraining Alberta's oil and gas workers for the solar industry actually costs far less than one might initially assume. Our recently concluded study offers clear evidence that a rapid shift towards solar energy implementation is not only environmentally beneficial but also economically viable.
1. Transitioning from fossil fuels to renewables does not equate to unemployment for Canada's oil and gas sector.
2. Retraining Alberta's oil and gas workers for the solar industry is less expensive than one might think.
3. A recent study provides evidence that shifting rapidly towards solar energy is economically viable and environmentally beneficial.
4. Retraining the fossil fuel workforce for the solar industry is not as financially burdensome as is often perceived.
5. A swift and cost-effective shift to renewable energy, facilitated by strategic reskilling programs, can revitalize Alberta's economy and contribute to addressing climate change.
According to a study done by Iron & Earth, an organization aiming to retrain oil and gas workers, retraining 1000 such individuals for the solar industry would cost about $3 million CAD, significantly less than the $240 million CAD annual costs of oil sector layoffs in Canada.
Transition to green energy doesn't necessitate leaving our fossil fuel workforce behind. Our study illuminated that the reality of retraining oil and gas workers for employment within the solar industry is not as financially burdensome as often assumed. A swift, cost-effective shift towards renewables can be viable, with strategic investment into reskilling programs. This approach could potentially revitalize Alberta's economy whilst also playing a crucial role in tackling the imminent threat of climate change.
