Aramco Among 50 Oil Firms Pledging Zero Emissions by 2050

Posted : December 2, 2023

Saudi Arabia's oil giant, Aramco, is among the 50 oil and gas companies that have committed to halt the addition of planet-warming gases by 2050. However, this pledge only pertains to emissions from their own operations and energy production processes. This move is part of a global effort to combat climate change, but questions still arise regarding the loopholes in these sustainability pledges.
1. Saudi Aramco, along with 49 other oil and gas companies, has pledged to stop the addition of planet-warming gases, but only from their own operations and energy production processes, by 2050.
2. This commitment is a part of a global effort to fight against climate change.
3. However, there are concerns over the loopholes in these pledges as the commitment doesn't include emissions caused by consumers using their products.
4. Over 90% of emissions associated with these companies come from the consumption of their products which are not covered in this initiative.
5. This raises questions about the overall effectiveness of this approach in truly mitigating the impacts of global climate change.
As of 2021, Aramco is the world's third highest corporate emitter of carbon dioxide, producing 59.26 million metric tons annually from its operations.
In their pledge, these petroleum giants are only committing to mitigate the emissions produced directly from their operations. This situation typically encompasses the extraction, refining, and distribution of their products. However, this commitment does not take into account the largest source of emissions: the burning of their products by consumers. This omission means that over 90% of emissions linked to these companies are not covered in this initiative, raising serious concerns about the overall effectiveness of this approach in combating global climate change.
