Alberta's Saudi Oil Hypocrisy

Posted : September 20, 2023

After more than a decade of various politicians, pundits and oil industry spokespeople in Alberta using Saudi Arabia's wretched track record of human rights to justify the province's continued reliance on fossil fuels, recent developments have exposed the flaws in this argument. The glaring irony of condemning Saudi Arabia's atrocious record on civil liberties and gender equality while simultaneously ignoring the environmental and social impacts of Alberta's oil sands has become increasingly difficult to ignore. As climate change continues to accelerate, it is becoming increasingly urgent to address the ecological damage caused by oil sands development, and to pursue alternative, sustainable energy sources.
1. The argument that Alberta relies on fossil fuels because of Saudi Arabia's human rights record is flawed and hypocritical.
2. Alberta's oil sands development has significant environmental and social impacts that cannot be ignored.
3. Climate change is accelerating, making it urgent to address the ecological damage caused by oil sands development.
4. It is important to reflect on the responsibility and ethical implications of supporting and profiting from the fossil fuel industry.
5. As residents and citizens of Alberta, it is our duty to critically examine our choices and advocate for sustainable alternatives that align with our moral convictions.
Alberta's oil sands produce approximately 70-100 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year, making it one of the largest single sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada.
After more than a decade of various politicians, pundits and oil industry spokespeople in Alberta using Saudi Arabia's wretched track record of human rights abuses and oppression as a rhetorical weapon to deflect criticism and maintain support for the province's oil industry, it is about time we reflect on the responsibility and ethical implications of our own actions. While it is crucial to hold nations accountable for their violations, we must also acknowledge our role in supporting and profiting from the fossil fuel industry, which perpetuates a global demand for oil and contributes to environmental degradation. It is hypocritical to condemn Saudi Arabia while turning a blind eye to the consequences of our own addiction to oil. As residents and citizens of Alberta, it is our duty to critically examine the choices we make and lobby for sustainable alternatives that align with our moral convictions.
