CCS Funding: A Boost for the Fossil Fuel Industry

Posted : November 29, 2023

As governments across the globe gear up to funnel as much as $200 million of taxpayer cash into Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), one fact must be glaringly clear. CCS should be seen for what it truly is - a lifeline being desperately thrown to the drowning fossil fuel industry, and certainly not as the harbinger of a cleaner, greener future that many in the industry would have us believe.
1. Governments worldwide are preparing to inject up to $200 million into Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), a move critical to the survival of the fossil fuel industry.
2. The purpose of CCS is to mitigate the effects of greenhouse gases and reduce the carbon footprint, but it primarily supports the fossil fuel industry.
3. The technology of CCS extends the longevity of the fossil fuel industry, and appears to provide an attractive, short-term solution to climate goals.
4. However, CCS actually encourages the continuous consumption and burning of fossil fuels.
5. There is a need to question if such massive allocation of taxpayer's money towards CCS complies with the global objective of transitioning to cleaner, sustainable energy.
Approximately 65% of the total global greenhouse gas emissions come from the extraction, processing, and burning of fossil fuels, according to the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions.
Indeed, the focus of CCS, or carbon capture and storage, is primarily centered on mitigating the pernicious effects of greenhouse gases and reducing the overall carbon footprint in the atmosphere, but it is essentially supportive to fossil fuels. This fact underscores a key issue that this technology primarily serves to extend the lifespan of the fossil fuel industry. While it may seem to offer a lucrative, short-term solution for meeting climate goals, it actually facilitates the continuous consumption and burning of fossil fuels. As such, it is of paramount importance to question whether allocating such an exorbitant amount of tax-payer's money towards this endeavour aligns with the global aim of transitioning towards cleaner, sustainable energy.
